All of us have moved in our lives; some of us more than others; most of us, more than we care to think about. The Puerto Vallarta Gay Men’s Chorus (PVGMC) has its eyes set on a new home and hopefully one last move. All we need is a little help from our friends.

The PVGMC has moved almost a dozen times in its first four plus years – sometimes with a few months’ notice, other times with less than 24 hours. We all remember the late night call from Ken and Kerry Sebryk asking us to meet early the next morning to get everything out of the old Boutique Theatre because of landlord problems. It seems like we’ve always been on the move and wondering when the next move would be.

All the while, we’ve worked hard, establishing ourselves as the first gay chorus in Mexico, becoming a permanent and proud part of the Bahia de Banderas community. Today, we perform year-round with a membership that represents the unique combination of cultures and generations found in Puerto Vallarta and Mexico. We constantly focus our mission of building bridges through our performances in this place we call home.

Now with the partnership owners of ACT II Stages and the vision of Danny Mininni, it looks like we may have found our own “forever” home. With a modest construction project, we plan to finish off the space on the third floor rooftop of ACT II Stages. The new space will be air conditioned and provide a large open rehearsal space with mirrors on one wall. Plans also include a storage area for our music library, audio and musical equipment, costumes and properties and another small administrative space and rehearsal coaching studio.

The first priority for usage of this space will be for the activities and rehearsals of the PVGMC. After that, the space will also be available for rehearsals for ACT II musical productions, and for other small productions and community meetings.

We are grateful for the hospitality of our many friends who have provided our many homes along the way – the old and new Boutique Theatre, the International Friendship Club, Art Vallarta, ACT II Stages and individual member’s homes and community areas. We are blessed with the friendship of Danny Mininni and Elizabeth Ensor who have told us for the past three years that they wanted the PVGMC to one day move in and become a permanent part of the ACT II family.

We’re ready to start the construction and move into our new home before the end of this summer. All we need is a little help from our friends who believe in our mission. Our goal for funding this project is $5,000 USD. This includes the electrical contracting, enclosing the open side of the space, finishing the interior and installing the two air conditioning units which have already been donated. Our budget will also provide for storage shelves and inexpensive seating.

Todos de nosotros se han mudado en nuestras vidas; algunos de nosotros más que otros; la mayoría más en que queremos pensar. El Coro de Hombres Gay de Puerto Vallarta (PVGMC) tiene el objeto de un hogar nuevo y una mudanza final con esperanza. Todo que necesitamos es un poquito de ayuda de nuestros amigos.

El PVGMC se ha mudado casi una docena de veces en sus cuatro primeros años – a veces con unas pocas meses de notificación, y otras veces con una notificación de menos de 24 horas. Todos nosotros recuerdan la llamada tarde por la noche de Ken y Kerry Sebryk que nos pidió a encontrarlos temprano por la mañana siguiente para moverse todas las cosas del Teatro Boutique a causa de problemas con el dueño. Parece que hayamos estado siempre en mudanza y preguntándonos cuando sería nuestra próxima mudanza.

Nos enfocamos constantemente en nuestro objeto de construir puentes por actuaciones en este lugar que llamamos el hogar.

Ahora con la asociación de los dueños de ACT II Stages y la visión de Danny Mininni, parece que hayamos hallado nuestro propio hogar “para siempre.” Con un proyecto modesto de construcción, planeamos cumplir el espacio en la segunda planta del techo de ACT II Stages. El espacio nuevo tendrá aire acondicionado y nos proveerá un espacio grande y abierto para ensayos con espejos en una pared. Los planes también incluirán un área de almancenamiento de nuestra biblioteca de música, equipo de audio e instrumentos musicales, disfraces y accesorios y otro espacio de administración y studio de entrenamiento musical.

La prioridad primera del uso del espacio será las actividades y ensayos del PVGMC. Más allá de eso, el espacio estará también disponibles para las producciones musicales de ACT II, y para otras producciones pequeñas y mítines de la comunidad.

Agradecemos la hospitalidad de nuestros muchos amigos que han proporcionado nuestros varios hogares durante los años – el Teatro Boutique, viejo y nuevo, el Club de Amistad Internacional, Art Vallarta, ACT II Stages y las casas y áreas de la comunidad de nuestros miembros individuos. Alfonso López

Artistic Director, Choreography / Director Artístico, Coreógrafo

Luis Alfonso Lopez, bass-baritone, holds a Master of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). He graduated with Honors and is a member of Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges, The National Scholars Honor Society, Golden Key International Honour Society, as well as The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. During his early years he has performed in many operas and musicals, such as “Newsies” and “Fiddler on the Roof,” the Children’s Opera “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” and the Zarzuelas “Luisa Fernanda” and “El Dúo de la Africana”.

Professionally, Mr. Lopez has performed roles such as Doctor Grenvil in “La Traviata” and as Page in “Amahl and the Night Visitors” in productions of the ProCantus Lyric Opera. He has sung as a cantor for special liturgies at the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle – National Shrine in Texas. Other performances include the role of Sagrestano and Sciarrone in “Tosca” for South Texas Lyric Opera; he performed as Musical Director and Conductor for the Musical “She Loves Me;” and performed on the play “Alice in Wonderland” by André Gregory. He has performed in the V and VI Taller de Ópera Juvenil in Mexico. Mr. Lopez has also been a member and soloist for the Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, performed throughout Mexico as a soloist with the Chamber Ensemble Euterpe. He served as faculty at the UTRGV Music Department where he taught Music Appreciation, Voice, Music Theory and directed Broadway Musicals. He served as musical director for Opera Teatro-Bar in McAllen Texas, where he directed more than 100 different performances.

Mr. Lopez is now the Artistic Director for the Puerto Vallarta Gay Men’s Chorus, is the Co-Executive producer for The Voice of Vallarta, and is the Musical Director and Producer at Act II Stages Entertainment, where he directed and performed in the musical “Forever Plaid”. He is currently working directing several cabaret shows and the upcoming musical “Avenue Q” for Act II Stages.

Sally Estes

Principal Accompanist / Acompañante Principal

Sally and her husband, Jim, have been frequent visitors to PV for 30 years, moving here permanently in 2012. Sally’s life has revolved around music with early piano and clarinet lessons, and accompanying numerous H.S. and college soloists and ensembles. She earned her BA with an emphasis in piano performance. In addition to accompanying the Puerto Vallarta Gay Men’s Chorus, Sally plays keyboards with the Worship in Paradise praise band, is a clarinetist with the Vallarta Chamber Orchestra and teaches private piano lessons. Her hobbies include white-water rafting and reading.

Sally y su esposo, Jim, han sido visitantes frecuentes a Vallarta hace 30 años, y se mudaron aquí permanentemente en 2012. La vida de Sally tiene un tema musical con lecciones durante la juventud de piano y clarinete, y ella ha sido un acompañante de soloístas y ensambles colegiales. Sally recibió su bachillerato con una concentración en la actuacion del piano. Además de acompañar el Coro de Hombres Gay de Puerto Vallarta, Sally toca el teclado con el conjunto de alabar de Worship in Paradise, es un clarinetista con la Vallarta Chamber Orchestra y enseña lecciones privadas de piano.
